LORETO APRUTINO & COLLECORVINO

Located between the beach and mountains lies the historic town of Loreto Aprutino.

It is a historical town with many beautiful buildings in particular is Castello Chiola which was built on the site of a medieval castle and is now a 4 star hotel.

In particular Loreto Aprutino is known for its high quality olive oil and it forms part of the “golden triangle” with Moscufo and Pianella. There is an oil museum that opened in 2005 in an old mill from 1880 which was renovated. It tells the story of how the oil was produced and the different methods of doing so.

With a population of around 7,500 it is served with bars, restaurants, butchers, a supermarket, hairdressers, post office, bank and petrol station.

The patron saint of Loreto Aprutino is San Zopito and he is celebrated with a wonderful festa held on the first Monday after Pentecost. (50 days after Easter)

The town celebrates for three days, attending church, live music and street food. The main event is held in the Monday evening when a little girl dressed in white with a flower crown sits on top of a white ox which is decorated with colourful pompoms and ribbons. Accompanied by bagpipers and farmers, the ox walks through the town stopping at several churches to kneel. The origins go back to 1711 when a farmer didn’t stop working when a procession that was bringing the relics of San Zopito approached Loreto Aprutino but his ox kneeled. At that moment a sick farmer’s relative was miraculously cured.
